John Deden was born and raised in the Netherlands and then immigrated to the U.S. in 1950. Although he had several influential painting teachers and mentors, he was primarily a self-taught artist. He followed the Hudson School and American Impressionist styles. His favorite subjects were landscapes and seascapes in the New England area, especially Vermont, Connecticut, Monhegan Island, and other Maine sceneries. His love of location was often present in his work, as was his distinct sense of time and place in American landscapes. For the past 40 years, his art was accepted and earned awards in many juried shows, some at the Sheffield Art League in MA and many in Connecticut, including the Kent Art Association, The Arts and Crafts Association of Meriden, The Southington Arts and Crafts Association, Cheshire Art League, and Plainville Art League. In May 2014, he was part of a three-person show at Gallery 53 of the Arts and Crafts Association of Meriden. He also had two solo shows as part of the Southington Arts and Crafts Association’s The Gallery at the Orchards: one in July 2014 and the other in September and October of 2018.
